Why this role?
Within HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Office (CDIO), the Response Exceptions & Analytics (REA) group builds and runs large‑scale digital platforms that solve complex technical and operational challenges.
As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer – Tooling & Automation, you’ll sit right at the centre of this work, leading the tooling that enables infrastructure‑as‑code, automated deployments, and continuous delivery across HMRC’s estate.
What you’ll be working on
You’ll join the Tooling & Automation Team, responsible for designing, supporting and evolving a shared tooling stack used by multiple services and teams.
The tools you support enable:
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
- CI/CD pipelines
- Secure and automated service deployment at scale
The platform is hosted on AWS, using EC2, Docker, and modern automation practices to support teams across HMRC.
What you’ll be doing
As a senior engineer and practitioner, you will:
Tooling & Platform Ownership
- Develop and maintain the tooling stack that supports service deployment across HMRC
- Administer and support tools including GitLab, Jenkins, Terraform, Nexus, Artifactory, AWX Tower and HashiCorp Vault
- Ensure tooling platforms are secure, resilient and performant
Operational Support & Continuity
- Lead BAU support, incident response and change management
- Ensure services meet SLAs and maintain business continuity
- Provide user administration and access support
Delivery & Standards
- Work in line with Agile delivery practices, contributing to ceremonies and continuous improvement
- Maintain and update HMRC standards documentation alongside delivery
- Ensure knowledge transfer across the team
Leadership & Collaboration
- Lead and support a team of infrastructure engineers
- Act as a role model for best practice engineering
- Work closely with architects, product managers and service owners
- Contribute to workforce planning, budgets and technology roadmaps

- Networking and reverse proxies (e.g. Nginx / Traefik)
- Tooling such as GitLab, Jenkins, Vault, Nexus, Artifactory, AWX
- Live operations support, Agile, DevOps and ITIL practices
