Help keep critical systems running across the UK’s borders and trade services. HMRC is looking for an Application Operations Shift Leader to lead monitoring, support operations and ensure key services remain reliable and resilient.
About the role
You’ll play a key role in keeping HMRC’s systems running smoothly, leading monitoring and operational support across critical services. Working within the Borders & Trade team, you’ll help ensure systems are reliable, issues are identified early, and services are continuously improved.
This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll manage a small team, support live services, and contribute to wider improvements in monitoring and operations.
This role includes shift working across evenings, weekends and public holidays.
What you’ll be doing
- Leading monitoring and alerting activities across services
- Managing and improving monitoring tools and reporting platforms
- Identifying and responding to incidents quickly and effectively
- Analysing alerts and trends to prevent future issues
- Supporting live service operations and continuous improvement
- Managing and developing a small team of operators
- Planning team coverage and supporting day-to-day service delivery
- Working with stakeholders to understand and meet monitoring needs
- Contributing to new tools, technologies and operational roadmaps
What we’re looking for
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Experience with monitoring and alerting tools (e.g. Dynatrace, Opsview, AppDynamics)
- Ability to lead and support a team in an operational environment
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to work independently and make effective decisions
- Experience working in live service or technical operations environments
- Interest in developing skills in tools like Power Platform or observability tools
